Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skin’s oil (sebaceous) glands. This leads to plugged pores and development of whiteheads, blackheads, inflamed bumps, pustules, nodules or cysts, all of which come under the heading acne.

How do I treat acne?
Depending upon the grade of acne, I may choose a topical antibiotic like clindamycin, a topical quinolone like ozenoxacin or a topical dicarboxylic acid like azelaic acid along with a topical retinoid like adapalene, tazarotene, tretinoin or the recently-introduced trifarotene. For severe inflammatory acne, I may select an oral antibiotic like doxycycline or minocycline or the oral retinoid isotretinoin. I may suggest cyproterone acetate tablets to some ladies with acne, especially if their acne is accompanied by certain other problems like PCOD.
